Healthy Eating

Fruit

Eating a balanced diet is one of the best things that we can do for ourselves to look after our long term health.

If our bodies don’t have the nutrients and energy that they need, then we do not work as well as we could, we will not have the energy that we need, and our long-term health can suffer. We know that a lot of us do not eat a balanced diet, and we eat too much saturated fat, sugar and salt. It isn’t about good foods versus bad foods, but it is about balancing what we eat.

We know we should all be trying to eat at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables every day as part of a balanced diet.

The reason we should try to do this is because fruit and vegetables contain very important nutrients called anti-oxidants and phytochemicals which we cannot artificially replicate. They are the nutrients which work with our bodies’ defence systems to fight off diseases; especially coronary heart disease, strokes, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers. We need a variety everyday because each fruit and vegetable has got different types of these special nutrients, and we need a range of them to help us to fight off disease.
