Indoor Cricket League

The eagerly anticipated indoor cricket league took place over the last eight weeks at the Willowburn Sports and Leisure Centre. Teams from across North Northumberland competed for a place in the 'Champions League Final' which will be held in January.  The league, sponsored by Surridge Sports, was a new initiative to involve those who have no previous experience of playing cricket to have maximum participation in a new format. The Alnwick Surridge Indoor Cricket League made up of six teams which included recently reformed Chatton and Rothbury playing league teams Alnwick, Alnmouth, Warkworth and Ulgham. Every Wednesday evening, teams battled it out in the 'much loved' but very competitive competition for a place in the Alnwick area final, the winners of this final progressing onto the countywide final in January.

Each team produced glimmers of excellence during the competition but unfortunately Rothbury struggled to find their elusive first win in five matches, ending the competition as the only team not to notch up a win. At the top end of the table, Alnwick and Alnmouth were strong runners but both Warkworth and Ulgham competed until the very end and had an outside chance to qualify for the final. Despite Warkworth and Ulgham's best efforts, it was to no avail leaving rivals Alnwick facing a strong Alnmouth team to decide which team would continue their campaign in the New Year.  Alnmouth comfortably beat Alnwick in the league fixture but the pressure of the final meant it was anybody's game. Alnwick posted a mammoth 189runs; a target of 190 to win was always going to be an uphill struggle for Alnmouth, who eventually finished on 133runs.

Alnwick will now progress onto the final to be held at the Centre for Sport in Newcastle, whilst the others will have to wait until September 2012 for their next bite of Indoor Cricket.
