Sports Council Round Up 2011
It has been another very busy and successful year for the sports council who have been able to fund over £1,500 to enable local sports clubs and individuals to achieve their sporting goals. Amongst many others, the funding has enabled 21 people from the Alnwick District to gain vital Level 1 and 2 qualifications in their chosen sport from clubs such as The Percy Hunt Pony Club, Alnwick Ladies Hockey Club, Rothbury Village Cricket Club and the Alnwick Badminton Club. Other courses that have been funded include Safeguarding and Protecting Children which is vital for all coaches to hold.
The council have also continued to work in partnership with the North Northumberland Sports Development Team and Northumberland Sport to enable them to offer the correct advice to all of the clubs, and make them aware of any alternative funding sources available. Many clubs have also benefited from the Northumberland Sport 'Young Coach Bursary Scheme' which has helped young people from the district access funding.
As well as supporting the local sports clubs and individuals, the council also run an annual Sports Awards evening which is a great opportunity to celebrate the sporting successes of the district. In celebration of the sporting achievements of 2011, a sports awards evening will be held on the 16th March 2012 at the Alnwick Playhouse. The sports council have chosen a later date to host the awards evening to hopefully avoid any bad weather and to also link in with the Festival of Alnwick Event which will take place in June 2012 to welcome the arrival of the Olympic Torch into Alnwick. Further details of the awards evening will be communicated through the Northumberland Gazette, including information on how you can nominate your sporting stars.
Clubs from within the Alnwick District can become affiliated to the sports council for an annual fee of £15 (plus a joining fee of £20 for new clubs). This then enables clubs to apply for funding, access sport specific courses and any other advice which will improve their club. Affiliations are still being taken for April 2011/April 2012. Funding is still available so now is the time to get in touch.
