Rothbury Walking Festival

For many thousand years the Simonside Hills and Coquetdale have been a place that people have congregated for the summer solstice.

This year the first ever Midsummer Walking Festival will be taking place from Saturday 13th June until Saturday 20th June 2009, with a series of day and evening walks taking place in the Rothbury and Coquetdale area.

The walks will be led by some true experts in their fields, including full time National Park Rangers, local walking businesses and trained up volunteers. The five volunteers, or ‘apprentices’ have been carefully picked and will be put on a training programme costing in excess of £1000.00 to bring them up to the high standards that the walkers will be expecting. With people already coming to the walking festival from America and London their high expectations will have to be met.

Jon Monks from Shepherds Walks who has been actively involved in the planning of the festival said ‘It is great to see such a great event being organised in what I think is the finest area in the region. The variety of walks on offer for this festival is second to none and I am certainly looking forward to taking part in it’.

All the money raised from the walking festival will be put into the ‘Good Nature Fund’ which will be spent on environmental projects in Northumberland National Park.
