Golden Age of Northumbria Outdoor Activity Festival 1st-7th September
ST. CUTHBERT’S OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES FESTIVAL
September 1st - 7th 2008
Take a walk from an Anglo-Saxon palace to one of England’s largest hill-forts, follow sections St. Cuthbert’s Way from Melrose to Lindisfarne or take a boat journey to meet an 8th century Northumbrian monk. During the first week of September St. Cuthbert’s Festival offers:
- Series of 5 Themed Guided Walks
- Boat Trips
These outings explore unspoiled landscapes and historic sites associated with people and events from north Northumberland’s Anglo-Saxon and early Christian heritage.
The Festival marks the anniversary of the transfer into Durham Cathedral of the relics of St. Cuthbert, the patron saint of North East England, and is part of the Heritage Lottery funded Golden Age of Northumbria project.
There are five themed guided walks and two special boat trips. The programme has been planned with the help of the Berwick Group of the Ramblers Association, who are providing experiences leaders for most of the walks. All the events include extra features such as living history performances and expert interpretation of the historical and natural heritage on the route. The activities are arranged to be equally accessible for people using cars or public transport from and returning to Berwick-upon-Tweed and other local towns. Where no public transport is available the organisers are providing a free shuttle bus link.
Several of the walks are quite long and they are generally over rough ground, but all are rewarding and most are manageable by anyone who is reasonably active. Children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. No dogs are allowed. All participants should wear appropriate footwear and clothing, and bring packed lunches.
The walks are free of charge, but booking is required for both the walks and for shuttle transport, where provided (Tel. 01289 330218 by 5pm two days prior to the event).
Tickets for the boat trips (£12 adult, £3 child) can be booked in advance through Billy Shiel (Tel: 01665 720316) or paid for on the day of the activity, but spaces are limited.
A free brochure with details of the programme and transport arrangements is available from local TICs and information can be found at http://www.goldenageofnorthumbria.com/programme.html
