Junior Slalom Canoeists on Top
Two budding junior paddlers have achieved their targets early for this year by being promoted to Division 1 in Canoe Slalom last weekend. Both Zac Allin aged 12 from Tyne Valley Canoe Club and Chloe Glendenning from Hexham Canoe Club competed at the Holme Pierpont National slalom event in Nottingham over the bank holiday weekend where they achieved 3rd place for Zac and 2nd place for Chloe. They then went on to better these results by Chloe achieving 1st and Zac gaining 2nd places at Abbey Rapids near Barnard Castle. Chloe also gained promoted in the Canadian class of C1 at this event.
Both competitors received financial help through the Stan Calvert Foundation that supports talented young athletes last year. Canoe Slalom is an Olympic discipline that takes the families and young competitors all around the country and both youngsters have aspirations to make it in the Olympic team in the future. More immediate goals will be to do well and gain more experience in Division 1 throughout the rest of the season which runs through to the end of October.
Anyone wishing to see slalom at the grassroots entry level can come along on the 4th July to Tyne Riverside Country Park Prudhoe where the Tyne Valley club will be hosting an event on their club waters.
Hexham Canoe Club meet at Tyne Green Hexham and have now moved into their new Canoe club with showers and changing facilities. For more information about canoeing and contact details for the local clubs go to www.canoe-england.org.uk
