QEHS U16 Girls Football Team with coach Philip Stead

Active Tynedale would like to congratulate the girls’ football team from Hexham’s Queen Elizabeth High School on becoming U16 Northumberland County Champions after a run of undefeated games this season.

The Hexham girls started the season with league matches against Cramlington and Ashington, and progressed on to beat Walbottle and local rivals Haydon Bridge.

They then faced a difficult challenge against Prudhoe but a superb hat-trick from Abby Kellet gave QEHS a well deserved win. Further matches against Sacred Heart, Ponteland and Walker placed the QEHS girls into an exciting final against Ashington.

The first half of the final match ended 0-0 but the QEHS girls confidently started the second half with all guns blazing. However neither team could find the net and the match went to extra time and then to a penalty shootout.

Ashington stepped up first and the penalty taker struck the ball over the bar. Next up was QEHS’s Abby Kellett who struck the ball with pace into the top left corner of the goal while Ashington scored their second penalty. QEHS goalkeeper Chloe Glendinning pulled off a superb save to deny Ashington and Gemma Common slotted her penalty in the bottom right hand corner to make the score 2-1 to QEHS. The next Ashington penalty was again expertly saved by Chloe Glendinning. Finally, up stepped Catherine Johnston who buried the shot in the back of the net to seal the win for the QEHS girls and secure their undefeated record for this season.

QEHS PE teacher Philip Stead congratulated the team: “The girls have played some impressive football throughout the season, especially against the top teams. Each player has contributed to the success of the team, showing character, determination and commitment to training and matches. They have made the whole PE department proud of their achievements.”

Nicola Hepworth, Women and Girls Football Development Officer for Northumberland Sport said "this is a fantastic achievement by Queen Elizabeth High School girls football team, they have played against some high quality teams and to remain undefeated all season is something to be proud of".
