On Tuesday the 1st December 2009 the 35th Annual Tynedale Sports Council Awards attracted over 300 people who came to see Newcastle United Footballer Steve Harper present trophies and certificates to Tynedale’s most talented sports men and women. The event was once again sponsored by Tyne Valley Insurance and held in Hexham.
Awards were presented to clubs, teams and individuals, players, coaches and young leaders in a variety of sports from athletics, cricket, football and golf to truck racing and sailing. Award recipients were aged between 10 and 80, demonstrating the diversity of the sports participants in Tynedale and their achievements.
Stocksfield golfer Chris Paisley was named the district’s outstanding sporting achiever of the year. The accolade followed the 23-year-old’s sterling efforts for Great Britain and Ireland being their star man in the prestigious Walker Cup clash with the mighty USA! This earned him not only the Hexham Courant Trophy as sportsman of the year, but also the “victor ludorum” Tynedale Trophy for the top performance of all the winners.
