Foundation Stage
FUNdamentals
FUNdamentals takes an integrated approach to early years’ education, introducing children to skills that will be invaluable to them both in sports activities and as they get older, via four core principles – healthy minds, healthy bodies, healthy choices and safety & protection. In addition, the scheme recognises the individual needs of all early years children and addresses all six areas of learning – social, physical, linguistic, intellectual, creative and educational.
Above all, the programme is about adopting a FUN approach to physical activity, and the exercises revolve around the appealing characters of ‘Funky Cat’ and the rest of the family – ‘Springy’, ‘Stretchy’, ‘Steady’, ‘Speedy’, ‘Sporty’ and ‘Swingy’.
A comprehensive set of support materials is available for use at home, in nurseries, pre-school groups and foundation schools which includes work cards, activity posters, records of achievement, attendance cards, certificates and badges, music CD and kit of ideas.
FUNdamentals was created to respond to the demands of both the education sector and parents for a programme that introduces pre-school children to the basic skills required for an active lifestyle, as well as providing an effective introduction to all sporting disciplines. In addition, the scheme supports many of the key objectives laid out by the Government to provide children with ‘the best start in life’.
