Northumberland Continues to Exceed National School Sport Targets
The latest results for the annual school sport survey from the Department for Education have recently been published and give a clear indication of the participation rates in PE & Sport that young people receive in Northumberland Schools. We had a fantastic response in Northumberland with all the schools in the county completing the survey.
The results were released on 4 October and we are delighted to announce that the summary headlines from the national survey once again show that Northumberland continues to exceed previously set national targets relating to the percentage of pupils participating in at least 120 minutes of curriculum PE.
We would therefore like to congratulate all partners including SSP staff, school staff and pupils on once again ensuring that Northumberland has;
• Increased the 2 hrs (weekly) Physical Education participation rates - which are now officially up to 88%
• Exceeded the national average by 2%
• Increased numbers of pupils participating in inter and intra school sport and sports leadership activities
For the first time, the 2009 -10 Survey, also measures the number of young people taking part in 3 hours of PE & School Sport each week.
National Feedback
Responding to the survey results, Steve Grainger, Chief Executive of the Youth Sport Trust, said:
"The results of this survey demonstrate the great strides that schools across the country are taking to improve PE and school sport and make it the best it can possibly be for young people.
It's great to see the significant increase in the number of young people taking part in intra-school competition. Whilst there's also been an increase in inter-school competition we recognise that there is more that can be achieved in this area.
We're also delighted to support the new Government in its plans for a School Olympics style competition and hope this can drive even greater opportunities for young people to compete.
The structure of school sport has been transformed in recent years and the network of 450 school sport partnerships is the envy of the world. We are proud to see the hard work of Partnership Development."
