In the last year a number of our high schools have received subject specific PE inspections and have come out with flying colours. At Prudhoe High School (Feb`09) Ofsted reported that:”Achievement is outstanding. The quality of teaching and learning is outstanding. The quality of the curriculum is good with some outstanding features and ‘The quality of leadership and managemen’t is outstanding.

The report did though highlight the need for involvement of more students in Years 10 and 11 and the sixth form in at least 2 hours high quality PE or sport each week.

Ashington Sports College Ofsted Inspection

More recently, at Ashington Sports College (Nov 09), under the new framework, Ofsted reported that;

Learning and progress are outstanding. Students are highly committed to PE and sport. They concentrate hard and are determined to improve. They are confident when working independently. Participation rates are high and behaviour is very good.”

An exceptionally positive learning ethos is well established and relationships between students and staff are very positive.Students are fully engaged and they say that lessons are fun and challenging.”

"The curriculum is planned exceptionally well and meets students’ needs very well. A very rigorous approach to monitoringand evaluation results in improvement plans that are focused clearly on priorities and outcomes for students.”

"Leadership demonstrates an exceptionally strong commitment to inclusion and success for all in its broadest sense. The highly committed team shares the values of this sports college and continually strives to find ways to use sport and PE todevelop the whole student.”

Overall Effectiveness

Ofsted judged the "overall effectiveness of PE to be outstanding also highlighting a need for "providing more opportunities for sixth-form students to take part in physical activity and sport."

Both reports make for highly impressive reading and great credit goes to all staff and students involved in these dedicated and forward looking departments. To view each report in full, please visit the Ofsted website and search for Northumberland - Secondary school reports.

Opportunities from ‘Outstanding Achievements’

CPD Opportunity: As a result of Ashington Sports College’s success (in the context of the new Ofsted inspection framework), the school has been inundated with requests from PE colleagues from far and wide to visit the school in order to share the good practice. It has been too difficult for them to cater for everyone on an individual basis so the PE department has agreed to host a number of open days over the year to welcome PE colleagues to share their work.

Please click on CPD information to download a flyer put together by the school with dates & costs to share their work. A CPD opportunity not to be missed!
