Physical Education and School Sport Professional Development Programmes Impact Survey

Image

An AfPE survey to evaluate the impact of Physical Education and School Sport Professional Development Programmes on pupils' standards, achievement and personal development was recently conducted.

As a local authority Northumberland has been identified as one likely to be able to show good practice in the Provision of CPD.  In October 2009, we received an impact visit from HowardTodd (AfPE Consultant) to measure the impact of CPD programmes on children and Young people in our schools.

Local Schools Identified

We identified the following schools as having been highly committed to, involved and pro-active in engaging with and contributing to the Northumberland PESS CPD programme;

  • Ashington Sports College
  • Ponteland Middle School
  • Haltwhistle Community Campus (Herdley Bank)
  • Abbeyfields FirstSchool (unable to participate due to staff and pupil illness)

As part of the impact visit /inspection - the AfPE consultant met with Alan Wallis and Andy Brown to gain information relating the background of the CPD programme in Northumberland and discuss evidence relating to systems, impact etc.  The three schools identified above were then visited for a half day by the Consultant.

Feedback from afPE Assessment

Feedback from all visits was extremely positive and the following headlines give an indication of the reports conclusions;

"The visits to schools provided valuable information that will contribute to national evaluation and reporting.  All of the schools visited have engaged positively with the professional development programmes (PDP's) provided by the local authority."

Achievement and standards in observed work in schools: "The impact of professional development opportunities provided through the Local Development Agency (LDA) results in good and sometimes outstanding achievements in pupils' learning."

"Current work indicates attainment for the majority of pupils is above average.  A variety of professional development programmes have helped to accelerate the pace of improvement in a first, middle and upper school."

Personal Development and well being in observed work: "The professional development opportunities provided by the LDA makes an outstanding contribution to pupils' personal development and wellbeing."

"Impact on achievement and standards in whole school PE: The impact of professional development opportunities on learning outcomes in whole school PE is good.  This is much better 'picture' than that typically seen nationwide."

Summary & Full Report

We are obviously delighted with the results of the visit and the content of the report (a copy of which can be downloaded be clicking here) and wish to acknowledge the strong contribution and engagement shown by the schools above and of their course their dedicated members of staff.

The contents of this local inspection visit will form part of a National report to be compiled by AfPE in the New Year.
