Signifcant Progress on School Travel Plans

92% of schools in Northumberland have sustainable travel plans, and are on track for all schools to have plans by March 2010, which is a great achievement.

The following Schools newsletter (below) focuses on the achievements of school travel plans in gaining a modal shift away from car usage and the future of travel plans. To gain ‘Healthy Schools’ accreditation (Physical Activity criteria section) Schools needed to have a travel plan and now all schools must have a School Travel Plan in place by 2010!

  • Promotion of walk to school week each May and a Walk on Wednesdays initiative (WOW)
  • Running your own travel plan accreditation scheme
  • Resource packs to help schools develop 5 minute walking zones
  • Information relating to cycling to school training
  • Developing a travel health check system for schools which should be ready by March
  • Developing walking buses
  • Developing individual healthy travel leaflets
