GB Gold Winning Team

Northumberland Sport would like to congratulate Sandra Hyslop on a truly remarkable double Gold medal winning performance at the recent Wild Water World Champions held in the USA, which was arguably one of the most successful weekends of racing in Junior Wild Water Racing’s history.

Sandra, who is based at the Hexham Canoe Club, Northumberland, won a Gold medal in the women’s K1 (kayak single) classic event, racing spectacularly all the way to the finish line.

In the sprint event, Sandra also won Silver in a time of 228.95 (just one second behind the winner) and to cap a memorable Championship, was a member of the women’s K1 Gold medal winning team, who finished an incredible 15 seconds faster (19.10.46) than the German team that came in second place (19.25.66).

Judith Rasmussen, Regional Director at Sport England North East, said:

“We’re so proud of Sandra and her phenomenal success in this exciting sport. To bring a world Gold medal back into the North East is a credit to the determination and effort of Sandra and the incredible support she receives within the region. She offers an exceptional example for the younger generation and is sure to help increase participation in kayak and sport in general. We congratulate her on what is a great achievement.”

Congratulations to the team for some truly memorable racing!

What is Wild Water Racing?

Wild Water Racing involves racing canoes and kayaks down rapid rivers; it is an exciting and challenging discipline, combining the speed of flatwater racing with the technical aspects of slalom racing. Competitors choose their own route down the river to pick the fastest line. To be successful requires technical ability in reading the river and an efficient paddling style.
