The 2012 bus continued its journey across the region with a visit to Cramlington as part of its bid to excite and inspire the people of the North East.

Even the pouring rain could not dampen the enthusiasm of hundreds of children from across the region participating in the London 2012 Roadshow as it attended Cramlington’s Get Active Northumberland Day on July 19th - a spectacular event that promoted the roadshow’s aim of encouraging people to take up sport.

The event organised and hosted by Blyth Valley Arts and Leisure welcomed people to try a range of free sporting activities inside and outside of Concordia Leisure Centre, Cramlington.  The day saw 160 children from schools across the area trying out handball, tennis, basketball and archery, to name just a few.

Bruce Ledger, Chief Executive of Blyth Valley Arts and Leisure, said "Both Blyth Valley Council and Blyth Valley Arts and Leisure are committed to getting people more active and are delighted to host the 2012 London Roadshow. The Get Active Northumberland day was great opportunity for local people to have fun and find out how to become more active."

Also helping inspire the crowds was our very own Sporting Champion, Paralympic Gold medalist Stephen Miller, whose achievements include representing Great Britain for over ten years, competing in three Paralympic Games, three World Championships and two European Championships.

Stephen is currently the World Record holder, Paralympics, World and European Champion in the Club event. A local talent, Stephen attended Percy Hedley School before heading into mainstream education at Southlands Middle School in Cramlington.

Stephen said: “This day has been fantastic, the children have been participating in all types of sport and look as if they’ve been really enjoying themselves, proving sport is not only good for you, but that it can also be a lot of fun.

“Events like these really strike up children’s interest in sport and with so much going on in the region with clubs and coaching schemes - sport is more accessible than ever before.”
