New Sports Programmes for Our Communities

This autumn proved to be a very busy time for our 6 Sport & Physical Activity Alliances (SPAA’s), as lead officers worked to develop their ‘Action Plans’ to move forward, which were developed following a series of consultations with local partners involved in sport and active recreation.

The Action Plans have identified local needs which will be addressed through applications to Sport England’s Community Investment Fund ‘Devolved Funding’, of which Northumberland has a potential to secure £862k over the next 3-4 years.

Contained within these action plans are a number of new projects, between 2 and 5 per SPAA which specifically target increased participation by adults (16+) in priority groups.  Some of the innovative projects SPAA’s are proposing tackle the County’s hard to reach groups in rural communities or under-represented groups.  Projects include: Rural activity delivery, Club Development work involving parents and volunteers and Sports Inclusion Officers.

Following a review by the Northumberland Sport core team in November and working with each SPAA lead as part of the phase 1 process, each application was then submitted to Sport England on the 29th November.  These proposals will be continuously developed between now and the final ‘Stage 2’ submission date of 8th February 2008.

Although very challenging, the near future promises to be very exciting for the development of each of our SPAA’s across Northumberland with the implementation of these plans and our ambitions to increase participation in sport and physical activity, once of course they are approved!
