A whole class of 34 children and young people from Collingwood Middle School in Morpeth recently took part in a Bellboat 250 metre sprint challenge. This formed part of a national challenge promoted through Canoe England’s Paddlesport Participation teams to School Sports Partnerships and centres/clubs who were able to plan the event with their respective regional Paddlesport Development Officers

Bellboat’s are a great versatile and stable craft for getting large numbers of mixed ability groups afloat and introduce them to Paddlesport in a fun way.

Moira Blackhall Collingwood School Sports Coordinator said “This was a memorable learning experience, with lots of fun, laughter and team spirit. We would like to push the boat out and ask to have a full day next year.”

This formed part of this year’s National School Sport Week, which took place between 30 June and 4 July 2008. This initiative was launched by The Prime Minister and Dame KellyHolmes, which asks all School Sports Partnerships to engage in wide ranging school sports competitions as a way of celebrating young people’s achievement and talent in sport. National Government Bodies and School Sports Partnerships were tasked with creating innovative developments to engage as many young people in a sporting activity.
