Cultural organisations across the North East will this weekend (commencing Friday 26th September 2008) kick off the celebrations for the Cultural Olympiad with many institutions and organisations offering the public the chance to see or take part in something which is happening as a special event, or that would normally take place behind the scenes.

North East ‘Open Weekend’ events are taking place throughout the region with over 40 events confirmed so far in Newcastle, Gateshead, Darlington, Middlesbrough, South Shields and Sunderland.

Events include:

  • Seconds Out - a project exploring the similarities and differences between dancing and boxing
  • Bob Log, low down dirty bluesy garage rock
  • BBC Newcastle open day
  • Science Circus, exploring science through circus
  • Premiere of new films capturing the vibrancies of North East communities from the politics of Afro hair styles, to groups in Benwell knitting famous landmarks
  •  Family sculpture days
  • The opportunity to find out how music can transform communities and bop along to the power of AfroReggae from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
  •  A photographic and film project exploring the pain and enjoyment of running

We would be delighted to see you at any of the events to celebrate the launch of the Cultural Olympiad!
