European Badminton Success for Will!

Will in action in Germany

Northumberland Sport would like to congratulate our badminton star player Will Smith from Prudhoe who interrupted his A Level revision to represent England in the European Disabled Badminton Championships in Dortmund, Germany, over the recent Bank Holiday weekend.

Still only 17, Will competed against older players and excelled, coming home with Silver and Bronze medals to add to the Bronze which he won in Seville in September 2006, his first time in a European event.

This time Will was runner-up in the Men's Singles in his Amputee category, defeating his former Bronze Medal winning Doubles partner along the way as well as a formidable Russian player, before finally succumbing to the favourite, a very experienced German, in the final. In the Doubles, playing with his partner from Wales, Will added a Bronze medal to his ever-growing collection. All in all, a fantastic achievement for Will, whose progress and improvement has certainly been noted by the foreign opposition and coaches.
