Everyday Cyclists save thousands during Bike Week

Between 14-22 June, cyclists using the Everyday Cycling website registered over 42,000 cycling miles on the site’s Activity Log.  With fuel costing around £1.20 per litre, trips made by bike saved members around £7000 at the petrol pump in just one week.

Registered users of the free cycling information site contributed to the massive mileage total, the equivalent of cycling almost twice around the equator, riding from Lands End to John O’Groats forty-seven times, or riding a quarter of the distance to the moon!

In the process, Everyday Cycling users who clicked the ‘trip’ button on the site’s activity log indicated that they had saved 972 car journeys during Bike Week, on school runs, commutes and trips to the shops.

Everyday Cycling, which is promoted by British Cycling, has been working with various counties, including Northumberland, during Bike Week to promote the campaign in an attempt to encourage more people to lead a healthy active lifestyle and take cars off the road.

Although Bike Week is over, people are encouraged to keep logging in and recording daily mileage on the Everyday Cycling website.  Please visit the Everyday Cycle page for further information.  It all adds up!

Steve Cram, Chairman of Northumberland Sport said “ Cycling is a great way to keep fit and integrate exercise into your daily routine. It was great to see so many people accepting the challenge to ride 25 miles during Bike Week. We hope people continue to cycle as part of their normal routines now that theyve had the chance to try it out for a week.”
