Sporting Champion and former Olympic Gymnast and twice Commonwealth Gold medallist, Craig Heap, was on hand to present a Nintendo Wii console package to Marc Friar aged 10 from Lindisfarne Middle School Alnwick, for winning a prize draw for taking part in Northumberland Sport’s ‘Sport Unlimited’ programme during the summer term.

What is Sport Unlimited?

This national programme which is managed by Northumberland Sport in Northumberland aims to establish what sports young people actually want to do. By identifying the local need, a wide range of 10-week, high-quality Sport Unlimited taster sessions have been organised across the county, which have been designed to inspire youngsters to sign up for longer-term participation in local clubs in the community.

Marc’s chosen sport for the summer term was golf and he participated in a 10 week organised Sport Unlimited programme at Alnwick Golf Club and was subsequently entered into a countywide prize draw for attending 100% of the sessions.

Marc said: “The Sport Unlimited golf sessions at Alnwick Golf Club were really good and I really enjoyed myself.”

Craig Heap said: “My role as a Sporting Champion is to raise the aspirations of all young people involved in the Sport Unlimited programme and encourage continued participation at local community clubs after the Sport Unlimited tater sessions have finished. It’s therefore great to see that Marc has been able to really enjoy the golf sessions and been able to use them as a platform to continue playing golf which I hope he’ll continue to do for many years to come.”

Eddie Dent, assistant coach and junior event organiser at Alnwick Golf Club said: “We’ve unearthed abit of a star in Marc. By taking part in the Sport Unlimited programme, Marc has been able to receive quality coaching in all aspects of golf shots. As a result of the dedicated 10 sessions, Marc has now progressed to being awarded a club handicap and I’m very confident Marc will now continue to play golf for many years to come.”

Vic Howey from North Country Leisure who manages the delivery of the Sport Unlimited programme in the Alnwick area said: “I’m really pleased for Marc to have received this prize. Sport Unlimited has proved a very popular addition to our sporting programme for young people in the Alnwick area, which has seen a variety of sports delivered from your traditional sports such as hockey and tennis to other sports including golf, dance, street cheer and kayaking to name a few. We will now continue to work with Northumberland Sport and local clubs to provide more opportunities for young people for the coming year.”
