Former Olympic Gymnast and twice Commonwealth Gold medallist, Craig Heap, was on hand to present an ipod nano to Rosie Hodnett aged 11, from Allendale Middle School in Tynedale, for winning a prize draw for taking part in Northumberland Sport’s ‘Sport Unlimited’ programme during the summer term.

This national programme which is managed by Northumberland Sport in Northumberland aims to establish what sports young people actually want to do.  By identifying the local need, a wide range of 10-week, high-quality Sport Unlimited taster sessions have been organised across the county, which have been designed to inspire youngsters to sign up for longer-term participation in local clubs in the community.

Rosie’s chosen sporting activity for the summer term was dance and she participated in a 10 week organised Sport Unlimited programme at Wentworth Leisure Centreand was subsequently entered into a countywide prize draw for attending 60% of the sessions.

Rosie said: “I really enjoyed the dance activities and would really like to take part in more activities like this in the future.”

Craig Heap said: “The aim of the Sport Unlimited programme is to encourage continued participation at local community clubs so it’s great to see that Rosie has been able to really enjoy the Sport Unlimited Dance sessions provided in Tynedale and hope she will be able to use this as a platform to continue to participate in further dance activities in the future.”

Kathie Keady from North Country Leisure who manages the delivery of the Sport Unlimited programme in the Tynedale area said: “I’m really pleased for Rosie to have received this prize.  Sport Unlimited has proved a very popular addition to our sporting programme for young people in the Tynedale area, which has seen a variety of sports delivered from your traditional sports such as rugby union and golf to other sports including golf, dance, and kayaking to name a few.  We will now continue to work with Northumberland Sport and local clubs to provide more opportunities for young people for the coming year.”
