Former World Champion Inspires our Swimmers
Nick Gillingham MBE presents swimmers with their medals
Former World Champion and Olympic Silver Medalist Nick Gillingham MBE helped motivate and inspire young people across the County to take part in the fourth Annual Swimming Festival for children with disabilities at Willowburn Sport and Leisure Centre, Alnwick on May 21st 2008.
Organised by Northumberland Sport and sponsored by the Amateur Swimming Association and npower through the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS), Up to 70 participants from both mainstream and special schools from across Northumberland competed in individual and team events
The festival proved to be a huge success. This year it was open to a greater range of participants due to the inclusion of small pool activities and range of fun and competitive swimming races. This unique setup enabled a broader depth of abilities to participate in the same event. Times were recorded for the competitive swimmers, highlighting some outstanding performances. It is now hoped that these swimmers will go on to compete in the Regional Championships in January.
