A series of county junior squash tournaments sponsored by racket suppliers Unsquashable finished with a presentation event on 17 May at Tynemouth Squash Club.

There have been twelve ranking tournaments between September 2008 and May 2009 held at Northern, Jesmond and Tynemouth Squash Clubs. Each tournament has attracted up to 70 junior players ranging in age from 7 to 16 years from across Northumberland. Divided into league groups based on ability, the juniors competed against each other to accumulated bonus points in the hope of wining Unsquashable rackets, bags and goggles at the end of the season.

The last tournament coincided with an exhibition match at Tynemouth Squash Club between two former world number 1 players, Peter Nicol and Lee Beachill, and the juniors were thrilled to have their prizes presented by these superstars of the sport.

The prize winners were: Harry Carr (Northern), Jamie Groom (Jesmond), Sam Birch-Machin (Northern), Sam Broughton (Northern), Martyn Hope (Tynemouth), Greg Bojke (Tynemouth), Alex Robertson (Northern), Simon Graham (Hexham), Sam Noble (Northern), Lewis Bartram (Tynemouth), Simon Grabham (Northern), Jamie Todd ( Tynemouth)

Richard Vitty, one of the tournament organisers, said “Junior squash is thriving in this area and it is tremendous that a local company like Unsquashable is prepared to support these popular local events”.

England Squash is working to raise the profile of the sport in the media in the hope that it will be included in the 2016 Olympics. For more information visit England Squash.
