Launch of StreetGames
The new and exciting StreetGames initiative has been launched for the North of the Tyne Region.
As part of this successful launch, which was attended by local community sports providers in the region, over 40 young people selected from the recent half term holiday programmes in Blyth Valley, Castle Morpeth and Wansbeck took part in a ‘Kwick Cricket’ tournament, which proved to be a real hit.
Carl Andersen, the StreetGames Development Officer for the North Tyne Region said that “initially StreetGames will focus on increasing the provision of activities for young people in the districts of BlythValley, Wansbeck, Castle Morpeth and North Tyneside. We aim to provide sport and dance on the doorstep for young people where they want it, at times when they want it and in a style they want it. We also aim to deliver sport to the doorstep of young people who are not members of sports clubs and are waiting for the chance to join in.”
StreetGames aims to help and support young people from deprived areas to get more active and involved in sport. Successes to date show just what can be achieved by taking sport directly into the heart of local communities. This innovative project will go a long way to helping young people from disadvantaged areas get involved and stay in sport, whether as a player, coach or volunteer.
Judith Rasmussen from Sport England said "We are really pleased to be able to support Northumberland Sport with their Street Games event. The StreetGames scheme will provide an excellent opportunity to engage young people in positive activities in their local environment and the challenge is to ensure they continue to participate after the event. It is a great initiative and we hope it will encourage more people to try different sporting activities"
