Mini Baskets Shoot to Success

Make a Move Festival Players

48 young budding basketball players from Blyth and Cramlington participated in the ‘make a move’ festival of basketball at Croftway First School, organised by Blyth Valley Arts & Leisure and ICCQ (Improving Croft & Cowpen Quay). The festival was an outstanding success, with the youngsters playing against other schools from the borough, a participant said

“I love playing basketball, it keeps me healthy, I learned loads of new skills and it was good to play against other schools”

The year 4’s from Morpeth Road, Croftway and St Paul’s First School attended six weeks coaching prior to the festival, learning the basic skills and rules of basketball. The school sports programme aims to provide young people with high quality sports coaching and opportunities and links to further their interest in sport.

The festival was organised by Community Sports Coach, Martin Deagle, he said “Basketball has proved a massive success with the young people, they have all completed six weeks coaching and put the skills they’ve learned into a game. The success of this festival will hopefully lead to a junior basketball club for young people in Blyth.”

On the back of the success of the coaching and festival, mini basketball will become a regular activity in Blyth Valley’s ‘make a move’ holiday activity programme and will continue to be a focus sport in the school delivery programme.
