Morpeth Amateur Swimming Club

Stirling 3

Morpeth ASC

Morpeth Amateur Swimming Club undertook a new venture at the end of June, holding the first ever residential training camp in the club's 42 year history.

20 swimmers, aged from 10 to 18 years, accompanied by 5 team managers and the club's head coach, spent two days in Stirling based at the university campus, and training at the National Swimming Academy facility.

Over the two days the swimmers experienced 5 hours of training in the pool, an hour's aerobic land training session and an inspiring talk by international swimmer, Andrew Mayor, who represented Scotland at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

The aim of the camp was to give the swimmers valuable experience of training in a 50m pool to help prepare them for the increasing number of available competitions in Olympic size pools (notably Sunderland, Sheffield and Leeds), as well as fostering team spirit, and teaching the swimmers to take responsibility for themselves, their kit and their nutritional needs. Emphasis was placed particularly on the requirement to keep well hydrated, and the club is grateful to Coca-Cola Enterprises for providing a supply of Schweppes Abbey Well bottled water for the swimmers and team staff.

The camp was a resounding success and the swimmers arrived back in Morpeth late on the Sunday night exhausted but having had an inspirational experience.
