Northumberland Hosts Britain's First Indoor Surf Kayak Competition
Young 'kayak surfers' from across the region competed at Britain’s first ever indoor surf kayak competition at Northumberland’s Prudhoe Water World.
Organised by the British Canoe Union and supported by Northumberland Sport, this provided the opportunity for young people to participate in a 'different' surfing event, which used kayaks rather than boards, while the event took to the indoors to take advantage of the pool's wave machine.
Ray Hudspith, PE School Sport & Club Links Development Officer with the British Canoe Union, said: "It was great to see such a good turn out for our first ever indoor surf kayak event, especially one that's geared towards young age groups.
Canoeing is a very adventurous activity and has something for everyone. And as schools and clubs are now working together to encourage young people to take part in club activities, it is important that support is given to events like these."
Judith Rasmussen, Regional Director with Sport England North East, commented that "it's great to see so many people enjoying a sport that is both fun and conducive to a healthier lifestyle."
