Men, women and children from across Northumberland have been taking up the Get Active Challenge, following a campaign led by Northumberland Sport to encourage more people to lead an active lifestyle.

Over 3,000 people from around the region have taken advantage of the Free ‘Get Active Open Days’ that have been held at sports and leisure centres across the county.

Centres at Ashington, Blyth, Cramlington, Morpeth, Alnwick, Ponteland and Prudhoe hosted the events, laying on a range of free sports and activities to enable the public to come along and have a go,at no cost and no obligation.

Swimming, fitness classes, archery, trampolining, gymnastics, tennis, dance, kurling, bowls and fencing were just some of the fun, sport and recreational activities on offer.

Northumberland Sport supported the events through its successful Get Active Northumberland campaign which aims to get more people, of all ages to take part in local physical and recreational activities.

Doug Lowery, Executive Director of Northumberland Sport said:

“The open days were designed to cater for all ages, so it was great to see such a good turn out, especially  whole families coming along together  to try out new and fun activities.

Concordia Leisure Centre at Cramlington had the biggest turn out with over 1,000 people coming through the doors in one day.  We have  also helped increase memberships and numbers on courses, so  achieving  our aim of  getting more people  involved in a regular fitness activity they can enjoy."
