Young Participants Enjoying Hexham's Race Day

Hexham Canoe Club recently hosted another very successful race day at Tyne Green, Hexham. Children from all over the region turned up to sprint race from as young as 8 in lightning's, Wavehoppers and sea kayaks and finally at the end of the day, tandem open canoe races.

The day commenced with a coaching session in the morning providing the opportunity for everyone to ‘have a go’ in all the different boats.  One beginner had a challenge trying to stay up right after 4 swims but still fully enjoyed the day.

A course was set around 4 marker buoys for the afternoon races, with the young participants expected to do 2 laps, which was a great success, producing some great times.

The open boat racing produced a great finale to the day, with some strong competition and determination as the young participants set off in three timed heats. Youth rep and junior member Chloe Glendenning decided to take part in this after helping with coaching and took part in all 3 of the heats with various partners and managed to win each one. Unfortunately only two adults were brave enough to take on the juniors in the open boat race but "well done to them".

A big thank you went out to all coaches and helpers for making the whole day possible and making it such a success. The event was supported by Simon Tibbetts, Regional coach and Ray Huspith, Paddlesport Development Officer for the North East.
