Slaley Riding for the Disabled Given Cash Boost
Slaley Riding for the Disabled (RDA) group has been given a cash boost by Northumberland County Council.
The group of volunteers has been awarded £450 from the county council's west area committee Community Chest Fund which will help to cover the cost of hiring ponies that are required for weekly riding for the disabled sessions.
The RDA group works closely with children at the Priory School in Hexham to enhance the lives of physically and mentally handicapped children through horse riding, care of horses and outdoor exercises.
The riding lessons take place at Bradley Hall Riding Stables, Wylam between April and October with twelve local children regularly taking part.
RDA Volunteer Joan Welsh said: "This grant is very welcome. We are experiencing ever-increasing costs of providing this activity which means so much to the children that ride here. I am sure I speak on behalf of everyone, from the riders, and also our dedicated group of volunteers, that we are thrilled that the council has chosen the Slaley RDA as a project to support from its Community Chest Fund."
Northumberland County Councillor Neil Bradbury added:
" There are many physical, psychological and social benefits of the riding for the disabled sessions including enhanced co-ordination, balance and communication skills. "
"I know the group work hard on various fundraising initiatives and I am delighted the council has been able to offer financial support for such a worthwhile local cause."
