Sport Unlimited Partnership Success in 2010
Young People involved in the organised climbing activities
Northumberland Clubs for Young People (NACYP) has recently been working in partnership with Northumberland Sport to offer a select range of sporting opportunities to young people in Northumberland, through the Sport Unlimited programme.
During the Spring Term 2010 (January-March), the Cramlington Voluntary Youth Project Ltd (CVYP) took part in a pilot programme which saw young people visit Silksworth Ski Slope for 6 weeks of Snowboarding lessons in which they also achieved a qualification.
Following this success of this pilot NACYP ran a variety of sporting sessions for young people during the summer term 2010 (April-July) which included;
Dance Activities
The dance sessions were held at two separate locations, these were Red Row and Cramlington Voluntary Youth Project Ltd (CVYP).The sessions at Red Row were delivered over a period of 8 weeks and were delivered to a total of 7 girls. The dance sessions at CVYP was also delivered over 8 sessions and they were delivered to 29 young people, which was made up of 28 females and 1 male.
One of the Senior Youth Volunteers said that the sessions "were worth it and I am sure that what we built on our Wednesday evening sessions will spread further".
Climbing Activities
Climbing was successfully delivered over a period of 8 sessions at CVYP. The activity was delivered to 17 young people, 12 of which were males and 5 females. The young people gave a lot of positive feedback about the climbing sessions and said that they "made new friends, was great fun and can't wait to do it again".
One of the youth workers said that with the success of the climbing programme 14 out of 17 young people achieved their NICAS (National Indoor Climbing Achievement Scheme) Level 1.
The youth worker also said that they "are going to Wales for a residential soon and we have now booked to do some climbing. Most of the group would like the chance to do their Level 2 NICAS and even progress onto their Coaching Awards".
Multi Sport Activities
Two multi- sports sessions were delivered through NACYP. These were again held over a period of 8 sessions and were delivered at Felton and Thirston Youth Club and at Red Row Kickstart. The sessions at Felton and Thirston Youth club were delivered to 21 young people, this included 13 males and 8 females. The multi-sport sessions at Red Row Kickstart had a total of 6 males and 6 females who attended the activity.
Partnership Success/Moving Forward
In total the NACYP Sport Unlimited sessions were delivered to a total of 91 young people, this included 59 females and 32 males. Neville Duncan, Sport Development Manager (young people) and lead officer for Sport Unlimited in Northumberland said, "it has been fantastic to work with this network and I would really like to thank Louise Clark from NACYP and all the clubs for all their hard work. It is great to see the programme has been enjoyed by so many young people. I hope these experiences will help to inspire these young people to continue with these activities in the future".
Northumberland Sport and NACYP are also working on an exciting coach bursary scheme where up to 10 young people and volunteers will have the opportunity to achieve a range of qualifications in new sports. These newly qualified leaders/coaches will then use these new skills to help provide an expanded Sport Unlimited programme to clubs during the Spring Term 2011.
