Sporting Opportunities in Northumberland

Northumberland Sport has produced a Workforce Development Plan following results of the Regional Workforce Survey conducted in the Spring in partnership with Skills Active, Sports Structures, Sport England and other regional CSP’s. This is the first time any attempt has been made to assess the skills needs of the “Active Leisure and Learning Sector” in the North East and at a sub regional level.

The plan signals the start of a process which will hopefully see a clearer picture of the skills needs and gaps for this sector to develop year on year. Northumberland Sport will coordinate work with providers in the sector to improve the provision of skills training and development for people employed in the provision of sport in Northumberland on a needs led basis. The plan will seek to provide a coordinated and collaborative approach to improving skills for sport in Northumberland initially covering the period to March 2009. The headline targets are to;

  • Train and develop 150 new Level 1 coaches and 200 new Level 2 coaches in local communities and clubs
  • Provide training support for 300 club volunteers and 240 young volunteers
  • Support the training and development of 80 Fitness Instructors
  • Coordinate 550 training places in fundamental operational skills within the paid workforce to maximize customer service and retention within sport and physical recreation.

The outcomes sought from this work are a more highly skilled, effective and creative workforce supporting increased numbers of people active in their everyday lives through physical recreation and sport.
