Team Talk
The success of a project launched by Blyth Valley Arts and Leisure has spawned plans to create a junior football team for disabled players.
Ability 2 Play was set up by Blyth Valley Arts and Leisure in partnership with Northumberland Sport and Northumberland Children’s Fund in April 2006, with the aim of increasing opportunities for young disabled people to take part in sport.
The project has allowed participants to access a wide range of sports including swimming, rugby, archery, sailing and football.
Work towards the formation of a junior football team for disabled players in Blyth is currently being carried out by Ability 2 Play with the help of Blyth Spartans and Blyth Town Juniors.
Strong links with Blyth Spartans have already been established thanks to an event on 24 March when the club welcomed Ability 2 Play members to Croft Park as mascots and spectators for their match against Lancaster City.
Speaking about the project, Adam Dixon, Community Sports Coach for Blyth Valley Arts and Leisure, said: “Ability 2 Play is about giving young people the opportunity to take part in sport. With the support of local clubs we are hoping to be able to establish a football team. Everyone involved with the project had a great day in March and we are sure that there is enough interest out there to attract players.”
