Steve Black Supports Our Community Sports Coaches
Steve Black speaking to our Community Sports Coaches
Steve Black, the Newcastle Falcons Strength and Conditioning coach was a special guest at the recent Northumberland Sport Community Sports Coach (CSC) training day. This was the first of three events for the 2007/08 CSC programme which was held at Kingston Park, the home ground of the Newcastle Falcons Rugby Union.
Steve proved to be a real hit as always on the day and not only spent time talking exclusively to the coaches about his personal experiences as a professional coach but also spoke in detail of other aspects to coaching, including;
- physiology
- and more importantly building good relationships with players
Steve also provided our coaches with good advice on where to pick up excellent coaching tips from available coaching literature including his own book which is due out shortly and should be available at your local book store. Examples of good tips Steve was able to provide on the day included;
- Have as many conversations with as many people as possible
- Discount nobody as you can learn from everybody
- Buy a journal, record everything and keep referring back to it
Neville Duncan the Project Development Officer for Northumberland Sport was full of praise for Steve Black’s support for Northumberland Sport. Neville said that “Blackie has been supporting us for the past 3 years with our Step into Sport Conference providing inspirational talks to hundreds of young people volunteering in Northumberland. When I first asked Blackie if he would come and help us today, I wasn’t sure he would be able to with his work commitments. But he couldn’t wait to help, telling me he wanted to give something back to local people.”
The Community Sport Coach Scheme is the result of a ‘Coaching Task Force’ report in 2002 and its recommendations that coaching needed to provide professional career opportunities for community coaches. Subsequently Northumberland Sport helped secure 9 full time and 21 part time coaches around the County.
Northumberland Sport in conjunction with sports coach UK have just started the second year of their annual Continuous Professional Development programme for the 27 coaches that are currently employed by Local Authorities, National Governing Bodies and clubs. If you would like any further information on the Community Sports Coaches Scheme, please contact Neville Duncan.
