Tynedale Sports Council Awards

The recent 33rd annual Tynedale Sports Council Awards attracted over 300 people who came to see Newcastle United and England star, StevenTaylor present trophies and certificates to Tynedale’s most talented sports men and women.

The event was once again sponsored by Tyne Valley Insurance and held in Hexham.  Northumberland Sport would like to congratulate all award winners on their achievements over the past year. 

Awards were presented to clubs, teams and individuals, players, coaches and young leaders in a variety of sports from athletics, cricket, football and swimming to car and truck racing.  Award recipients were aged between 10 and 80, demonstrating the diversity of the sports participants in Tynedale and their achievements. 

 

Those honoured included 14 year old Edward Common who represented Britain in powerchair football at the World Cup in Japan; Paul Burgess, a founder member of Hexham Canoe Club who is still coaching and competing at the age of 81 and junior World champion wild water canoeist, 17 year old Sandra Hyslop who also helped Great Britain to team gold in the World Championships in Colorado and was short listed for BBC Young Sports Personality of the year 2007. Sandra also received the overall “Best of the Best” trophy.

 

Also awarded on the night is the StanCalvert scholarship, a £500 grant to help further the career of the most promising sports person. Each applicant must submit a written piece stating why they need the scholarship and how it would help them to further their sporting success.  This year’s winner was canonist Anna-Louise Glendinning who is not only a top competitor but puts much back into the sport through volunteering. Last year’s winner, Rebecca McGinley gave a moving account of how the award had inspired her and given her confidence in her sport of golf.
