Challenge: 5 Hour Offer

The '5 Hour Offer' was announced by the Prime Minister in July 2007 with a commitment of an additional £100 million (over three years 2008-11) into the National School Sport or Physical Education and Sport Strategy for Young People (SSYP) Strategy in order to give every child and young person (aged 5-19) the chance to do 5 hours of sport a week.

This new funding will be drawn down from both the Department for Children, Schools & Families (DCSF) and the Department for Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) and will be split into 5 strands, namely;

  • the addition of Further Education sports co-ordinators linked to School Sport Partnerships (DCSF lead/funded)
  • the completion of the roll out of competition managers linked again to SSP's (DCSF led/funded)
  • top up grants to SSP's to pay for coaching (DCSF led/funded)
  • multi-sport clubs for children with special needs linked to SSP's (DCSF led/funded)
  • funding to support extended club activity designed to attract a different type of young person (DCMS lead/funded)

The Northumberland Sport Partnership has been asked to lead the development of plans to deliver against the extending activity strand, now termed Sport Unlimited.
