Golden Goal Wins Northumberland High Five Netball
Winners
Over 100 school girls and boys from 12 schools across Northumberland recently competed in this year’s Northumberland Sport County High 5 Netball Festival at Blue Flames, Newcastle. Two Australian Superleague players from the Northern Flames, Tessa Burton & Talei Bari were also on hand to provide some inspiration on the day and to help out with the awards ceremony.
The event was organised and delivered by Joan Campbell, Northumberland Sport’s Netball Development Officer with the support from Northumberland’s School Sport Partnerships and Competition Manager Team.
Winning teams had been pre-selected from each of the six School Sport Partnerships leagues in Northumberland and included players from Ovingham, Richard Coates, St Wilfrids, Wensleydale, Berwick, Tweedmouth, Cragside, Tynedale, Newminster, Corbridge and Shanklea Middle Schools.
After a fantastic festival, Cragside Middle School eventually prevailed to win a gripping contest in the final against Ovingham on the golden goal rule.
Joan said “following the success of last year’s festival which was the first to be delivered to year 6 girls, hopefully this festival will generate further enthusiasm for playing netball in Northumberland, especially with these players moving into year 7 shortly, where further opportunities will be provided through local clubs. This also afforded teachers and parents a glimpse into the world of elite coaching and practices.
“I thought the whole day was a tremendous success which all the children enjoyed immensely which I now hope they go on to use as a means to continue playing netball in their schools and local communities.”
