Mental Health

Mind Regonal NetworksAt the end of 2019, the national mental health charity, Mind, announced the launch of nine new Regional Networks in England to help more people with mental health problems engage with physical activity.

Northumberland Sport are delighted to be working with the other North East Active Partnerships: County Durham Sport, Tees Valley Sport and Tyne & Wear Sport, to bring this opportunity to the North East.

The Regional Networks will work to increase the number of groups in their region who are equipped with the skills to support and engage people with mental health problems into physical activity. We will offer training, toolkits and resources, as well as providing a platform for networking and sharing best practice to build stronger relationships between organisations.

By linking up local organisations across the physical activity, mental health and charity sectors Mind hopes its Regional Networks will support sport and physical activity organisations to be more inclusive of people with mental health problems.

    Physical activity and mental health

Everyone knows the importance of looking after their physical health, whether it’s looking after your physique, maintaining healthy organs or for particular health reasons, such as healthier cholesterol levels. Unfortunately, we’re not as strict with ourselves about looking after our mental health. One in four of us will experience mental health problems in our lifetime.
There are studies which show a strong correlation between the benefits of doing physical activity can have upon our mental health. These benefits include:

    • Better sleep
    • Happier moods
    • Managing stress and anxiety
    • Managing intrusive thoughts
    • Improved self-esteem
    • Reducing the risk of depression
    • Connecting with people and reducing social isolation
