Young volunteers take their place on the Northumberland Young Volunteer Team

17th December 2019

On Friday 8th November 200 young people from 13 schools across Northumberland descended on St. James Park, Newcastle to attend the first in a series of events to develop a Young Volunteer Team that will support the Northumberland School Games programme in 2020 and other school related sports events.

The event was led by sporting champions Craig Heap (former Olympic gymnast) and Katy Storie (former England International Rugby player) and introduced the young people to what makes a good volunteer and the skills needed to do this.  The young people created personal development plans based on their individual needs and took part in a number of workshops that would help them develop throughout this academic year long journey.

NUFC Foundation delivered a presentation on the fantastic community programmes they run in the county and opportunities for the young people to get involved with the work they do, including opportunities longer term for employment.

The young people will next get together on 1st April 2020 where they will receive more practical based training at Northumbria University’s, Sport Central including coaching, officiating and event volunteering.

We are very grateful to Sport England and Northumberland County Council for the investment they have put into this programme.
